Import Duty of Big Onions and Potatoes is revised.
The harvesting season of Big Onions and Potatoes has started by now. Considering an increase in supply of potatoes and big onions during the months of August and September, measures have been taken by the government to increase import duty of 1 kg of Big onions from Rs.10/- to Rs.25/- and 01 kg of Potatoes from Rs. 30 to Rs.35/- with effect from 10th August 2011. Moreover, In order to maintain stable price for garlic at the market, remaining import duty of Rs. 10/- for 1 kg of garlic has been increased up to Rs. 25/-.
In the light of an expected increase in supply of local potatoes and big onions during the coming weeks and an increase of the production cost of the local farmers, the government has made these revisions to the import duty so as to protect the local farmers.

Assistance from the Government of Japan for Priority Development Projects
The Government of Japan has agreed to provide financial assistance under its Yen Loan Package for fiscal year 2011/2012 in accordance with the priority assigned by the Government of Sri Lanka, to major projects of Development of Bandaranaike International Airport – Phase II, Rehabilitation and Expansion of Production Capacity of State Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Corporation, Improvement of Basic Social Service Targeting the Emerging Regions. At the discussion headed by Dr. P B Jayasundara, Secretary to the Treasury with the participation representatives of Japanese and Sri Lankan Governments on 11th August 2011, it was decided to expedite the evaluation activities of the projects and sign Loan Agreements on March 2012.
In addition, The Government of Japan has agreed to provide assistance to undertake a basic study on Project of Low Voltage Distribution Losses Reduction and Construction of Habarana – Veyangoda 220kV Transmission Line to increase the efficiency of the Power Sector.

The General Treasury allocates 103 millions
to purchase plastic containers for vegetable transportation.
The General Treasury has granted a large amount of money exceeding Rs. 103 million for the programme implemented by the government to introduce plastic containers with the objective of providing clean and quality fresh vegetable to the market preventing over wastage taking place while transporting vegetable in low standard containers such as gunny bags or fertilizer sacks.Over 150,000 containers have already been provided to the farmers, collectors of vegetables and the traders who are engaged in direct contribution, and further arrangements have been made to provide adequate plastic containers in due course(04/03/2011)

Marking a remarkable leap forward in the Sri Lanka consumer market, the government has fully taken over the ownership of the Shell Gas Company.

The International Reserves Reached USD 7 billion

All Share Price Index (ASPI) reached a record level of 5,000 points reflecting the country’s political and economic stability coupled with foreign investors’ confidence. ASPI up by 140 points closed at 5138.9 on 28th July.ASPI for the week ending July 22nd recorded 4,849 gaining 210 points while the MPI gained 268 points to close at 5,500. The exports earnings that declined in 2009 has recorded a growth during the first quarter of 2010.
The export earnings declined by 13 per cent to US $ 7085 million in 2009 due to the lower demand from the Sri Lanka’s major trading partners stemming from the rapid contractions in the respective economies.
